The Collection

I have a pretty big record collection now, with the number totaling 299... only one more until 300!!

I'm pretty sure I did a post like this a while back, so if I find it I'll be sure to link it below.

My collection has grown a lot, especially in the past two years or so.  I have a journal where I write down every record I obtain, but I would fall behind adding them in.  That was until I found an amazing way to keep track of my record collection, and also learn the minimum and maximum values of what I have.  It's a site called Discogs, and they have made it super fast and easy to keep track of everything you have acquired over time.  All you need is the Cat#, which can be found on both the vinyl itself and on the front of the album cover, both pictured below.

They don't only have LPs, so if you collect CDs, cassettes, and DVDs.  No matter what you log, each item will have a minimum value, median value, and maximum value, so if you are ever looking to sell, you know the price range based on the condition of your item.  Here's an example by showing you part of my collection:

Logging all of my records took me probably around 5 hours to do.  Yes, it's time-consuming, but you have to make sure that you're logging the exact copy you own, that way you get an accurate value (I also took it so  seriously because my boyfriend and I had a contest to see who has a collection worth more).

One of the biggest reasons why it was worth it taking so long to complete was because I found records I forgot I had.  I found records that I at one point listened to almost every day.  Even though I'm still young, I still felt nostalgic--like I was in high school again.

This is not a paid sponsorship!  I just wanted to share my ways with all of you, especially if you are one of my longer readers.  Since I just went through my list again, my next post will probably be an updated version of my favorite LPs, so check back this week for that!

Anna Sun

"Anna Sun" by WALK THE MOON is probably one of my favorite songs at the moment, along with "Just A Little Bit of Your Heart" by Ariana Grande (I'll talk about her song another day).

Originating in Cincinatti, Ohio, this indie pop group supposedly got their name from "Walking on the Moon," a song by The Police.

The band consists of Nicholas Petricca (lead vocals, keys, synthesizer), Kevin Ray (bass, vocals), Sean Waugaman (drums, vocals), Eli Maiman (guitar, vocals).

While "Anna Sun" was originally released in their debut independent record, I Want!  I Want!, it was re-released on their self-titled record, Walk the Moon, through RCA.

Their sound reminds me of Hunter Hunted, one of the bands that opened for twenty one pilots back in April.  I just think WALK THE MOON is a little more advanced lyrically.

Evangeline

It really is crazy how different a vinyl sounds from an CD.

I am listening to "Evangeline" recorded by Emmylou Harris and The Band on my iTunes playlist.  I usually listen to the song on The Last Waltz original vinyl and it is incredible how different they sound.  You see with vinyls, the song is directly recorded onto the record while CDs are just "copies" of the songs which are edited and what not.

But this is only true if you have classic records.  New records like Skrillex and Fun. are just like CDs so for you to really see the difference you need a Peter Allen or Men at Work album.

Money

I traveled to Vintage Vinyl in Fords, NJ today and got some new records!  Well, they were used. One man's trash is another man's treasure?

Back to the point, I bought three records.  The one was Money by the Flying Lizards.  The record contains only two tracks since it is in fact in single format.  I also purchased a Mamas & the Papas record that features their hits "Monday Monday," "Dedicated To The One I Love," "Words of Love,"and several others.  The last record I bought was a Queen hits album which includes "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," "We Will Rock You," and many more hits.

If you live in the area, Vintage Vinyl has a huge and great selection of vinyls, CDs, and DVDs, although the music takes up a majority of the space.  They have used and new vinyl records available for purchase and the prices are not bad either.  I love the store and try to get there as much as I can!

History of the Turntable - A Presentation

Last year in physics, we had the opportunity to pick anything related to physics and present a project on it at the end of the year to the class.  I obviously chose the turntable and did not regret my decision at all!

Now, you did not have to bring in a physical representation, but I did.  I took my record player and a handful of my favorite records and showed the class alongside my project.

I was going to explain the physics of the turntable to you, but I thought I would just let you take a look at my project.  Click here to view if you would like to strengthen your knowledge.

Paradise

I bought a Lana Del Rey record on Monday at Jack's Music Shoppe in Redbank.

Paradise is her third EP and includes eight tracks all around four minutes in length.  One of the three lead singles off the album is "Blue Velvet," a cover of the popular song from the '50s.  The other two singles were "Ride" (which is the first track) and "Burning Desire" (a song available iTunes).

My favorite song would have to be "American."  I love the lyrics - very complimentary of her voice.

She makes a couple references to well known American artists.  She speaks of Elvis in the second verse by saying, "Elvis is the best, hell yes."  In the first verse she sings of Bruce Springsteen and says, "Springsteen is the King don't ya think / I was like 'hell yeah that guy can sing.'"

But aside from her vocal talent, Del Rey writes her songs as well.  She wrote all of the songs on Paradise with the exception of "Blue Velvet."  Although, the song could certainly be her own.

Storage

I wish I had this storage for all of my vinyls.  I am just running out of room.

Mutual Friends

So this is the best day of my life. I bought BOY's record "Mutual Friends" today at Vintage Vinyl. The plastic around the album said "Feeling Lucky? Maybe this is one of the 100 ultra limited edition, numbered, red vinyl records!" and of course I never thought I'd be one of the lucky 100. I just got home and opened the record and opened the cover and saw that the two girls in the duo, Valeska and Sonja, signed it!! I immediately put the signatures under light to see if they were legitimate and surely they were! When I took out the record, sure enough it was one of the 100 red ones! This day just keeps getting better.

The record has thirteen songs:
1. This is the Beginning
2. Waitress
3. Army
4. Little Numbers (which I spoke about last week)
5. Drive Darling
6. Railway
7. Waltz for Pony
8. Boris
9. Oh Boy
10. Skin
11. Silver Streets
12. July
13. Little Numbers (Acoustic)

Like I said last week, I highly recommend this album especially if you are a fan of alternative!

We Belong to the Night

As I was going through my dad's records, I found this Ellen Foley one.  I had never heard of her, but when I was listening to Meat Loaf's Bat Out of Hell album, I noticed that she was a background singer for Meat Loaf.  I immediately took out her record and started listening to her song "We Belong to the Night", the one my dad said was the most popular.  For those who don't know who she is, she is an American singer-songwriter who has released three solo albums, but is most famous for her collaborations with Meat Loaf.  Her albums include Night Out (1979), Spirit of St. Louis (1981), and Another Breath (1983).  I highly recommend listening to some of her songs, especially "We Belong to the Night".

Happy Birthday

As you may know, I got a record player for my birthday. To go along with the record player, I got three records: Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, John Waite's No Brakes, and Summer Fun Vol. 2. Cher Lloyd's perfume also was a gift to me. It was in fact a very musical day.

To make my birthday even better, I made the school talent show and will be singing the song "Operator" by Jim Croce. When the talent show occurs, I will be posting a video of my performance on YouTube and on my blog for those who are interested in seeing how it goes.

Vinyls

My birthday is coming up (January 3rd) and I asked my parents to get me a record player.  I went down to the basement and brought up my mom's and dad's old records.  I took about 75 out of the 200 my parents still had!  But now I am looking for some more records to add to my collection.  If anyone has any suggestions of records I should buy, please write it in the comments below.  I want to make my collection the best it can be, so thank you if you help me!
