The Apple Tree

Nina Nesbitt is a very talented 19-year-old from Edinburgh, UK.  The singer-songwriter is able to sing and play the guitar, piano, and keyboard.

She has five EPs available for download on iTunes (even the US):
  1. Live Take (four tracks)
  2. The Apple Tree (five tracks)
  3. Boy (four tracks)
  4. Stay Out (four tracks)
  5. Way In The World (four tracks)
She announced on her Twitter last month that her debut album Peroxide is set to be released in February 2014 in the UK (sorry, US).  On top of that, she recorded a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop" which you can purchase on iTunes and covered "Love Me Again" by British singer John Newman for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.

I love her voice.  It is somewhat raspy but sounds amazing.  My favorite song may be "The Apple Tree" from the EP of the same name.

She has several music videos for her songs including (but not limited to) "Stay Out," "Make Me Fall," and her most recent one, "Selfies," a song on her upcoming album.

Sk8er Boi

Please tell me you remember this song.  Avril Lavigne from 2002.  The album was Let Go which peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 200 in the US and sold over 14 million copies worldwide.

But the song "Sk8er Boi" was definitely one of my favorites off the album.  The lyrics are so simple but you learn so much about the boy and girl during the song.

He was a boy
She was a girl
Can I make it anymore obvious?
He was a punk.
She did ballet.
What more can I say?
He wanted her.
She'd never tell.
Secretly she wanted him as well.
And all of her friends
Stuck up their nose.
And they had a problem with his baggy clothes.

And then later:

Five years from now, she sits at home feeding the baby, she's all alone.
She turns on TV and guess who she sees?
Skater boy rockin' up MTV.
She calls up her friends.
They already know.
And they've all got tickets to see his show.
She tags along, stands in the crowd.
Looks up at the man that she turned down.

And the girl now wants to date him because he's famous...annoying.

Sorry, girl, but you missed out.
Well, tough luck, that boy's mine now.
We are more than just good friends.
This is how the story ends.
Too bad that you couldn't see...
See the man that boy could be.
There is more than meets the eye,
I see the soul that is inside.

And then Avril Lavigne has her moment of victory.

He's just a boy, and I'm just a girl.
Can I make it anymore obvious?
We are in love.
Haven't you heard how we rock each other's world?

I met the skater boy, I said, "See ya later, boy.
I'll be backstage after the show.
I'll be at the studio singing the song we wrote about a girl you used to know."

She ended up with the skater boy after that chick turned him down and wanted him back.  Avril is teaching a good lesson in one song's time.

Drive Darling

So, I got my driver's license today! Being super excited, I created a ton of CDs to listen to in my car. I'll talk about those probably some time tonight, but for right now I am going to speak of another BOY song. I'm sorry, you are definitely tired of hearing about this duo, but I could not pass up the opportunity to talk about this song considering the circumstances. The song is called "Drive Darling." It talks about how you can't see what is left behind in the rearview mirror and how the freedom is great once you drive away but the lullabies are said goodbye to since you have to just drive away. It's my cousin's favorite song by them, and it is a pretty decent song.

Waltz For Pony

This song "Waltz For Pony" by BOY is probably my new favorite song off of their album Mutual Friends.
I assume that this song was written for a man named Pony, as it makes sense with the title. She doesn't want to lose the memories she has of/with this "Pony". Time is described as "a hungry beast" because it swallows all of her memories but she will not let that happen because she loves Pony so much and he loves/loved her. She puts "two saddles on its back" (time) so she and Pony can travel on time's back so time is unable to harm them.

5. Wake Me Up - Ed Sheeran

Mutual Friends

So this is the best day of my life. I bought BOY's record "Mutual Friends" today at Vintage Vinyl. The plastic around the album said "Feeling Lucky? Maybe this is one of the 100 ultra limited edition, numbered, red vinyl records!" and of course I never thought I'd be one of the lucky 100. I just got home and opened the record and opened the cover and saw that the two girls in the duo, Valeska and Sonja, signed it!! I immediately put the signatures under light to see if they were legitimate and surely they were! When I took out the record, sure enough it was one of the 100 red ones! This day just keeps getting better.

The record has thirteen songs:
1. This is the Beginning
2. Waitress
3. Army
4. Little Numbers (which I spoke about last week)
5. Drive Darling
6. Railway
7. Waltz for Pony
8. Boris
9. Oh Boy
10. Skin
11. Silver Streets
12. July
13. Little Numbers (Acoustic)

Like I said last week, I highly recommend this album especially if you are a fan of alternative!

Little Numbers

This song is my new obsession.  "Little Numbers" is a single off the album Mututal Friends by the pop-duo Boy.  The duo consists of Swiss singer Valeska Steiner and German bassist Sonja Glass.  The song is alternative rock, which is not a popular genre to a lot, but I think this song will win the approval of those people.  In the song, she is waiting for his call and tries to pass the time.  She then says "Seven little numbers, baby, they could be a start.  Seven little numbers, baby, I know yours by heart" and then the song goes into a nice beat and the chorus.  I bought the song and did not listen to it for a couple of days but once I did, I could not stop replaying it!
