All These Wolves

Flammable Animals, the band that debuted with What Lies Beneath the Parkway North last year, just released All These Wolves, a new EP that exemplifies the main components of alternative rock.  Fast rock tempos, clever hooks, jarring guitar work, and lyrics that make you think instead of just tapping your foot, are just a few of the several things Flammable Animals have seemed to perfect.

A few months back, bassist Pat Napurano approached me about conducting an interview for this EP, and of course I said yes.  I compiled a list of questions and sat down with Pat in their living room to get a behind-the-scenes look at All These Wolves.

How is this album different from What Lies Beneath the Parkway North?

First off, the production on this is way better - the quality is certainly there.  I think that everyone really pulled together on this one and we all just did our jobs really well.  I think it differs in the fact that it's mature and the songs are just better.

Is there any song in particular that you're really excited for everyone to hear?  And is there any one that you're really excited to play live?

If it's a song I want people to hear, probably "Due North" (Kevin's song).  That's the one I want everybody to hear.  But playing live, probably right now is "Ordinary Threat," 'cause I've been having the most fun with that one live.

Why do you want everyone to hear Kevin's song?

It's totally different in the fact that if you listen to our first EP, and then listen to this one and get to that track, it's just way different than anything we've ever done before.  That's the only song of ours that sounds like that.

I'm going to branch off a little bit from the album.  As a band in general, what would you say your ending goal is as a band?

End goal right now obviously for us is to get signed at some point and really try to do some heavy touring - really get our names out there.  That's pretty much it for right now.  You can't become complacent in what you're doing.  We want to go as far as we can with it.

Bands sometimes change their identities to try to reach that kind of goal and I know you said there's nothing in mind right now, but would you guys ever consider changing who you are in order to get to that point?

No, not at all.  We really love each other, and if you really want to get down to it, sometimes we'll fight like idiots but we do love each other, and that's why I like being in the band, because of who we are when we're around each other.  It works really well for us, so I don't think that will ever change and we will never change who we are, what we do. . .

So even musically you wouldn't change anything?

That's a different story.  Identity is one thing, but changing our sound. . . who knows?  I think this one sounds way different than the last one, and I like that.  I don't want to do two things in a row that are the same.  That was our goal, to really go in the opposite direction.  We targeted a bunch of areas last time to hit, like things we wanted it to sound like, but we also had the mind set of, "Let's stay from things we don't want to sound like," which is just as important, I think.  That's what really came into play here.

When you were writing the album, was there anything you were hoping to achieve with it?

At least on the business end of things, we would like this one to make a bigger impact than the last one did.  Everyone who has heard it liked it so far, so all positive reactions.  I'm interested to see how everyone else feels now.  We wanna see if it makes a bigger splash - there are more people paying attention now.  Artistically, I think this is exactly what we needed production and writing-wise.  I can't wait for everyone to hear this.

Baby, It's Cold Outside

I was just on the Billboard website and watched the music video for Idina Menzel's and Michael Buble's "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and it is very adorable.

The video is two kids singing and dancing through a hotel lip-syncing to Menzel's and Buble's parts.  The two singers even make some appearances in the video.

The song is off Menzel's Christmas album, Holiday Wishes, which was released back in October.

Check out the video below.

You & I

I can't believe it has taken me a week to discuss One Direction's "You & I" music video.

It's amaZAYN, phenomeNIALL, BrilLIAM, fabuLOUIS, and extraordinHARRY.  Yes, I just did that.

The video takes place on a mile long pier with a pretty grey color scheme, although the five boys brighten up the screen with their gorgeous faces.

It starts with Niall, singing his solo.  Liam follows Niall, but instead of just having Liam come up on the screen, Ben Winston, being the excellent director that he is, morphs each member into the next.  Niall looks down and becomes Liam as he looks up.  Liam moves his hand down in front of his face and becomes Harry.  Harry turns around and becomes Zayn (this part gives me goosebumps because the music changes and I think it is the best morph done in the whole video).  Zayn turns to the side and becomes Louis.  And Louis places his hand directly in front of his face to go back to Harry.

But there has been a lot of talk that One Direction has "plagiarized" Australian company Oh Yeah Wow's "freeze frame effect," which they claim they created.

I think if anyone created the "freeze frame" it would be the J. Geils Band.

That's my sense of humor.

But really, the idea of freeze framing has been around for a long time.  Nice try!

Yes, plagiarism is an issue we need to watch out for these days since the creation of computers and the internet, but I don't think I see plagiarism here, I see this as imitation.  Isn't imitation the finest form of flattery?

Leave my Brits alone.

Story of My Life

So I had a different post in mind for today, but after watching the new One Direction video, I felt it necessary to speak of that.

The song is called "Story of My Life" and is off their third and upcoming album Midnight Memories.  The song is amazing, but the music video makes it incredible.

The boys each recreate a favorite picture of theirs, but it is so touching to the point where I actually cried.  Did I overreact?  Probably, but watch the video for yourself and see what happens.

It was directed by Ben Winston, the guy who does all of One Direction's music videos, so he must be a pretty fantastic dude.  Just sayin'.  Well, here it is:

In The Dark

I was having a little trouble thinking about something to blog about tonight.  I have posts lined up, but I should not post those because then that would mess up my schedule.  I decided to post music videos with a theme...the dark.

These videos are from YouTube.

Dev - In The Dark

Lawson - Standing in the Dark

Bruce Springsteen - Dancing in the Dark

Best Song Ever

There is a new One Direction song out and even though they will be releasing a third album in the near future, their sound is not changing - usually singers change their sound a little bit by now.  The music video, which was released earlier today, is a promo for their movie This Is Us which will hit theaters at the end of August.  I have to say that I am never disappointed with One Direction's music videos.  This one is just as funny and creative as the others.

The song talks about how they each danced with a girl to "the best song ever," but he can't seem to remember the words.  To him, though, remembering the words doesn't matter because he "won't forget her."

My personal faves

I absolutely love music videos, especially those from the 1980s.  There's something about videos from the '80s that make you want to laugh, and I don't know what it is.

For example, Love Stinks by the J.Geils Band is hysterical.  The video starts off with a man jumping on a pogo stick while playing two trumpets and continues with many other odd occurrences like  someone cutting a tomato (which they show multiple times) and finishing off the song with a chimpanzee crawling away from a television.

Peter Wolf is probably just a funny guy, considering his song Come As You Are has a music video that is also pretty funny.  The whole video is him hopping through town.  Yes, hopping.

Cyndi Lauper's Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is another one.  From her parents yelling at her, to the pizza boxes, this is another video that a lot of people find goofy.

We're Not Gonna Take It by Twisted Sister is probably one of the corniest videos I have ever seen.  The father in the beginning is priceless and when the son starts playing guitar, the father flies out the window onto the ground.  And that's only one example.

Van Halen is a great band.  And Hot For Teacher is another video I have added to my list.  Dorky Waldo and the rest of the boys in his class have the hots for their new teacher that year.

Whip It by Devo...I almost have no words for this video.  The band is on a cheesy set holding whips and wearing the pot hats and then there's a cross-eyed woman.  Now tell me that's not odd.

Chevy Chase is a tall guy.  Paul Simon is a short guy.  And in the You Can Call Me Al video for Paul Simon's song, Chevy Chase is "singing" Paul's part and Paul is singing the parts with the low voice.  It's quite funny.

I apologize to The Flying Lizards, but Money is probably the worst video I have ever seen.  At one part she's dancing horribly and at another she's flying in mid-air.  I just don't understand.

Little Mixer

Being the huge fan of England that I am, Little Mix is definitely on my "favorite bands" list.  In 2011, Perrie Edwards, Jesy Nelson, Jade Thirlwall, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock auditioned for X Factor UK as solo artists. When none of them made it past bootcamp, singer-songwriter Tulisa Contostavlos put the girls together as a group and they made it on to the live shows.  The girls, ages 19-21, won the eighth season of the show, being the first group to win X Factor.  "DNA" is the second single off their new album DNA (available in the UK November 19) following their previous hit single, "Wings".  Yesterday, Little Mix's music video for their new song was released on youtube.com/LittleMixVEVO and vevo.com.  Here it is!
