Lights

I saw Journey in concert last night!  It was a dual concert with the Steve Miller Band.

First off, both acts sounded incredible.  Steve Miller's voice still sounds amazing, and Arnel Pineda sounds EXACTLY like Steve Perry to the point where it's actually very scary.

You know, now that I think about it... I think Arnel is better than Steve Perry.

Steve Miller Band

My favorite song the Steve Miller Band did was, of course, "Abracadabra."  I think it's such a classic tune and it is one of their biggest hits.

We've always liked Journey in my house, but my dad got really into their music when, if you remember, he talked with the pianist and songwriter for the band, Jonathan Cain (click the photo below to read the post).

So the band sounded remarkable.  Neal Schon performed a breathtaking solo of "The Star-Spangled Banner" that was pretty epic.  If you asked me which song I liked the most last night, I may go with "Faithfully" because that is my favorite song of theirs.

Or maybe I'd say "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)."

But I also like "Any Way You Want It."

I am indecisive.

Journey vs. Rascal Flatts

There was this show my dad recorded on CMT called Crossroads.  My dad recorded the episode because we love Journey (one of my May posts explains why).  Well, Journey and the country band Rascal Flatts sound flawless together.  Sometimes an unexpected mix of voices and instruments can sound a little messy, but I am telling you that the collaboration was put together perfectly.

The two groups performed Journey hits like "Separate Ways," "Faithfully," and "Don't Stop Believin'," and Rascal Flatts hits like "Life Is a Highway," "What Hurts the Most," and "Bless the Broken Road."

If you see this show or this specific episode on, I suggest you watch it.  I know I always say "watch this" or "listen to this," but that's only because everything I blog about is worthy of your attention.  I would never make you listen to something that doesn't deserve to be listened to!

Father's Day

Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers out there!  In honor of this day, I thought I would make today's post dedicated to my dear father.
My dad loves music as much as - if not more than - I do.  Every Saturday night (and any other night he cooks dinner instead of my mom) he has music playing over the stereo.  He puts together a playlist, usually themed, using his 10,000+ library.  He actually ran out of room on iTunes and now has other songs on a drive.  People sometimes even ask my dad to make the playlist for a party they are having because he does such a good job.  So, to honor my dad's amazing work, I put together a list of my dad's favorite artists.

  1. Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
  2. Telephone Line - Electric Light Orchestra
  3. Tommy (the whole album) - The Who
  4. Aqualung - Jethro Tull
  5. Already Gone - The Eagles
  6. Open Arms - Journey
  7. Peggy Sue - Buddy Holly
  8. Billion Dollar Babies - Alice Cooper
  9. La Grange - ZZ Top
  10. Cocaine Blues - Johnny Cash

Jonathan Cain - I have his autograph

My dad just got home from a business trip to Belfast, Northern Ireland. While he was there, he ate at a restaurant called Deanes and just happened to sit next to Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain. My dad started talking to him about the band and their tour through Europe and then got ME his autograph on the back of the dessert menu! Yes, it is signed to me from a rockstar.
Jonathan Cain, born in Chicago, originally played in bands like The Babys and Bad English and joined Journey in 1980. Not only has he played with these major bands, but he co-wrote one of the most famous songs ever, "Don't Stop Believin'" with Steve Perry and Neal Schon and also co-wrote "Separate Ways" with Steve Perry but those are only a few of the several he has written.
When my dad called and told me he got me his autograph, of course I was ecstatic because of the huge music fan I am. I have the autograph of a rockstar.
